All about First House Part – 1

Nomenclature: The first house of the horsocope depends on the lagna, one is referring to. This house is also referred as lagna bhava, udayam, tanu, adya or janam bhava. Each of these names is appropriate according to their connotations. Lagna is drawn corresponding with the 1st breath taken by the child at the time of the birth, hence it is called lagna bhava. At the time of birth, a particular sign rises on the eastern horizon. Since Udayam means rising, this bhava is also known as Udayam Lagna. Tanu means body. The first house indicates basically physical attributes of the native; hence it is called Tanu bhava. Adya means beginning. As this house marks the beginning of life: hence it is called Adya Bhava. First house indicates the basic life, length of life and whatever one achieves in life; hence it is known as Janam Bhava.

Birth Time: The exact time to be considered as birth time of the child is shrouded in controversy. Many theories have been propounded and each is based on different phases that the child passes in order to start the life like the appearance of the head, the cutting of the umbilical chord or the first cry of the child. The vast majority of doctors & astrologers are of the opinion that the first cry should be considered as the actual time of birth: as it is the time when the child is on its own and shows first sign of life by grasping for breath and cries. This is the time one should take as time of birth of child.

The Ascendant: The entire life of a native is epitomized by the Ascendant. It is the solid, physical foundation/ pillar of the horoscope. It represents the earth, since it marks where the earth meets the heavens (stars & planets) on the eastern horizon. It is also the window through which all the other houses are seen. If the lagna & lagna lord are weak, then all the other houses are weakened regardless of the individual strength of each house. The reverse is the case if lagna and lagna lord are strong. Therefore it is imperative that the lagna & lagna lord should be strong & well placed to achieve anything tangible out of significance of any house. The Ascendant is the quickest changing indication in the chart that will significantly differentiate births given on the same day. It therefore, represents our self, personal identity and main character traits than any other planetary indication.

The Moon: The Moon is the physical guardian of the incarnating soul. It provides the necessary impetus and power to sustain different kinds of activities. If the possibilities for achievements on the basis of Ascendant are great, but the Moon offers no support, the achievements will either elude at the last minute or will be short-lived. Moreover the lunar influences are very powerful with regard to one’s astro-mental make-up and physical/ material conditions as well as the strength of one’s aura. The Moon is the channel through which the life essence pours into the native. Through it all the impulses, which activate a native, are energized. The Moon is the fastest moving planet as it changes sign approximately every two and a quarter day. It is called the Mana or mind and represents our thoughts, feelings and perceptions. The Moon represents our internal experiences of life and determines our state of happiness. Sage Parashar has said, “The learned in astrology should base effects on Moon also as are applicable to the Ascendant. The Moon is given a significant status equal to the ascendant for she rules one’s mind and the mind in turn functions as per one’s Karma. Sage Satyacharya declares that the 12 houses should be considered with reference to both Ascendant and the Moon lagna in interpretating their significance. He further says that one should study the horoscope from the ascendant or the Moon lagna whichever is stronger in their Shadbala (six fold) strength. Shri Mantreshwara in “Phaladeepika” says that all Yogas should be considered from Moon lagna as well. Chandresh (Moon lord) is the sign/ nakshatra lord based on the time of the birth. For those born from Sunrise to Sunset in bright half or from Sunset to Sunrise in dark half, sign lord is taken as Chandresh. Similarly for those Sunrise to Sunset in dark half or Sunset to Sunrise in bright half, Nakshatra lord should be taken as Chandresh. If Moon is in Cancer, then Nakshatra lord is taken as Chandresh.

The Sun: The Sun is the next fastest planetary indication and is never retrograde in motion. The Sun represents the spiritual pinnacle, the Atman, God, Spirit and our radiant eternal self. The Sun is the source of power, strength, vitality & knowledge and has an unifying role whereby all activities are centralized & directed towards the primary goal of life. It is the central generative impulse of cosmic manifestation. The Sun operates from the inner depths, illuminating the mind & soul, arousing spirituality and making the personality glow with radiance. It shows how we shine and express ourselves as individuals. It also represents our level of confidence and our ability to command authority. The Sun is the source of vital Pran energy. Sage Parashar and Varahmihir had also confirmed the use of Surya Lagna as alternate lagna of lesser importance.

female scholar

Lagna lord Mars is Digbali in 10th house (with Rahu) aspecting lagna. It indicates a very ambitious career focused lady. The Moon & the Sun are in 8th house in intellectual Gemini sign with 8th lord intellectual Mercury, making the native a scholar. If one intends to examine the nature of relationships, the native has, one should analyze 7th house/ lord and Venus. Venus as 7th lord is in 7th house (forming Malavya yoga) and aspects lagna. 2nd-5th lord Jupiter is natural & temporal benefic for this lagna, aspects this Venus. The native also has “Kedar Yoga”. This indicates that the native is a wealthy scholar, relationship oriented, sociable and fulfilling long term relationships in her life.

Now analyze with Gemini as lagna, where the Moon & the Sun both are located. Lagna lord Mercury is in lagna and aspects 7th house. This denotes a tendency for self-absorption, which can be a problem in relationships. 7th house is aspected by Rahu. 7th lord Jupiter is debilitated and retrograde in 8th house with 8th lord Saturn. Venus the planet of relationships is in 12th from Lagna.

With two opposing interpretations from alternate lagnas, what should be the correct answer? Both interpretations should be synthesized into one holistic perspective. This lady is very articulate, communicative, scholarly & friendly by nature and comfortable socially. However she prefers to spend time alone. She puts priority on her self and her career. Her relationships have been sporadic with periods of intimacy, as well as separation & isolation. She never had any long term relationship.

Significations of First House:

The first house reveals the true self of the native i.e. the inner self as well as the personality. The assessment of life in all its variety can be done effectively only on the basis of the total horoscope, but the first house reflects the entirety of a native’s life within a small compass. The first house represents the life-essence with which the soul begins its journey in a particular incarnation. The capabilities acquired by a native during its previous births are not lost; they become part of its general nature. For successful completion of one’s assigned tasks in any lifetime, a certain amount of total life-essence is made available to him for the specific birth. The house represents the quantum of energy apportioned to him, the environment and condition of his life, and the general direction that he shall have to pursue during the course of his life in order to complete his goal.

Physical Appearance: It includes the structures of the native, the bodily proportions, height, color and the complexion. The lagna, lagna lord, the planets placed in it, the Moon sign lord and Navamsha Lagna would all determine the physical attributes of the native. The sign of lagna, the Moon sign and the Navamsha Lagna sign have also a marked say in further delineating a native’s physique.

Mental Disposition: This and how one reacts to situations can be seen from the strength of lagna, its sign, the planets posited therein or aspecting it and especially from its relation to Moon. Mind denotes consciousness through volition and feelings situated in the brain. The first house is the seat of alert or conscious mind.

Life: The life of a native can be evaluated from the first house; whether it is going to be smooth or troubled one, sickly or healthy can be seen from this house. Sage Parashar says that, if lagna lord is well placed in Kendra/ Trikona, the native will enjoy good health.

Longevity: Since the moment of first cry is equated with the first breath and thereby with the ascendant, the longevity of the native directly corresponds with the strength of the Ascendant. The strength of the lagna, lagna lord and the benefic/ malefic influence on them determines the longevity of a native. If the life span of the native is short, then the achievements in life can not be much.

Diseases: The diseases, a person is likely to have and their cures, if any, can be seen from the first, sixth and eighth house.

Untoward incidents: Any untoward incident occuring in one’s life can be found out from the malefic influences on the lagna and lagna lord.

Body language and personality: How one carries oneself and one’s mannerisms, can be evaluated from this house. Benefic influences on lagna and lagna lord will impart grace to the personality.

Wealth: The propensity of a person to earn and enjoy depends on this house. It shows how much one is endowed physically to earn. This house being 12th from the 2nd house indicates the expenditure on oneself.

Gains of & Happiness from Co-borns: The first house is 11th from 3rd house (of co-borns), hence it shows materialistic gains of co-borns. It also shows whether one will derive any materialistic happiness from co-borns.

Mother’s profession & happiness from it: As lagna is 10th from 4th house (of mother), it reveals the professions of mother and the happiness one can derive out of it.

Capabilities and achievements: The first house represents the life-essence with which the soul begins its journey in a particular incarnation. The capabilities acquired by a native during its previous birth become part of his general nature. Hence one’s capabilities and achievements in life are revealed from this house.

Miscellaneous significations: In addition to above, as per Uttara Kalamrita, following can also be read from the first house:

i)                    Limbs and their size.

ii)                   Happiness/ Unhappiness

iii)                 Birth place/ childhood

iv)                 Knowledge/ wisdom

v)                  Honour, self-respect & strength

vi)                 Sleep/ dreams

vii)               Skin & Hair

viii)              Political life

ix)                 Peace & Diginity

x)                  Livelihood & ability to work

xi)                 Nature to insult & to avenge

xii)               Loss of decency

xiii)              Freedom from insult

xiv)             Nature to renounce

xv)               Gambling for others

xvi)             Stigma

xvii)            Endeavouring to preserve livestock

xviii)          Defamation from one’s own Kinsmen or persons of same caste.

Importance of Lagna & Lagna Lord

The lagna (ascendant), the Moon lagna, the Sun lagna, the Karakamsha lagna (sign where the planet with highest degree i.e. Atmakaraka, is placed in Navamsha) and the Paka Lagna (the house where lagna lord is placed) are the five most important lagnas in a horoscope. Whenever a house is being analyzed, one must see that the house or its lord should not fall in a Trika house from any of the above lagna. Otherwise the native will be adversely affected in varying forms.

i)                    If it is from the Ascendant, the native loses the Poorva Janam support.

ii)                   If it is from the Moon, one loses the will power.

iii)                 If it is from the Sun, one doesn’t get the results commensurate with the efforts put in.

iv)                 If it is from the Atmakaraka, then one’s fighting spirit diminishes.

v)                  If it is from Paka Lagna, one has the janamas dosh.

The role of lagna lord can’t be undermined. It is like an engine of train of one’s destiny/ fortune. The more powerful the engine, smoother is the journey of one’s life. It is like the key to the native’s entire personality, personal nature and the amount of achievements one will get, from whatever is promised. As lagna lord is the lord of the entire horoscope, it is essential that the lagna lord is strong and well placed to give native what his horoscope promises.

Astrological Principles for Spirituality Part – 1

Hari-yoga, Hara-yoga, Brahma-yoga: Yogas relegated to Visnu, Siva and Brahma

Naturally, devotees of the three principle deities behind creation (Brahma), sustenance (Visnu) and destruction (Siva) are going to be found frequently in the charts of spiritual aspirants. These are defined as follows:

Hari-yoga: Benefics are in the 2nd and 12th, or in 8th from the lord of the 2nd. Since the 2nd house, like the 6th, is in a trinal location from the 10th, it is very closely linked to Laksmi-devi (Sri) in Jyotish. The 10th, although the seat of Indra or svarga-loka, is the most important house of Visnu, as it is through the 10th house that all of creation is maintained and protected. Later in this article, how the 6th house (seva) connects one to spiritual path is discussed as well. Anyway, Hari-yoga indicates the connection of Hari (another name for Visnu, which means “one who protects the devotee from all calamities”) to the 2nd house, which is ruled by Sri, the goddess of fortune.

Hara-yoga: Benefics are in the 4th, 8th or 9th from the lord of the 7th. Hara is another name for Lord Siva. The 7th house is the seat of Lord Siva, given that he presides over the functions of destruction or annihilation. Thus reinforcement of auspicious houses relative to the 7th lord brings the support and blessings of Lord Siva.

Brahma-yoga: There are two ways in which Brahma-yoga can be formed:

a)      Benefics are positioned in the 4th, 10th and 11th from the lord of the lagna; or

b)      Jupiter is in kendra from the 9th lord, Venus is in kendra from the 11th lord and Mercury is in kendra from the 1st or 10th lords.

Particularly, the first definition of the Brahma-yoga applies in this discussion, as Brahma, the demi-god in charge of creation, rules the lagna or the 1st house. By way of positioning benefics in the 4th, 10th and 11th houses, the lagna is reinforced and strengthened, thus bringing the blessings of Brahma in horoscopic symbolism.

Yogas involving Jupiter and Venus (sura and asura guru respectively)

These, in essence, are yogas for great learning:

Jupiter and Venus are respectively Brhaspati and Sukra among the planetary pantheon of demi-gods. They are thus the gurus of the suras (godly entities or demi-gods), as well as asuras (demonic entities) respectfully. Their functions are great perceptors or gurus, with respect to para and apara vidya. Yogas involving these two gurus are significant in the charts of spiritualists, and in fact are found in a variety of cases. The most important of such yogas involving Jupiter and Venus are as follows:

Sarasvati-yoga: Jupiter, Venus and Mercury are in kendras, as well as the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 9th or 11th houses. The result is that the native becomes a learned scholar in a variety of subjects and is recognized as such. This yoga is especially poignant when found in the Navamsa as well as Vimsamsa charts.

Bheri-yoga: Jupiter and Venus are in kendra from the lagna lord, while the 9th lord is strong. The result is a virtuous, religious and saintly individual who possess many auspicious qualities.

Amsavatara-yoga: Jupiter and Venus are in a kendra from Saturn, who is either a strong yogakaraka or is in exaltation. This gives great learning, renunciation and a spotless reputation. Note that this yoga forms verbatim in the Navamsa (D-9) chart of Srila Ramanujacarya.

Kalanidhi-yoga: Jupiter in the 2nd or 5th house conjoined or aspected by Venus and Mercury. This indicates exceptional character, learning, respect and a widespread reputation.

Bharati-yoga: This is an important yoga for spiritual learning and forms in two ways:

a)      The Navamsa dispositor of the 2nd lord joins (in the Rasi chart) the 9th lord; and

b)      The Navamsa dispositor of the 5th lord joins (in the Rasi chart) the 9th lord.

Again, in these instances, the 2nd and 5th lords and their connections to the 9th lord are important to note when evaluating the levels of spiritual knowledge which may be attained by the native. Bharati-yoga gives the native intelligence, learning, a spotless character and a far-reaching reputation.

Yogas involving Dusthanas: 6th, 8th and 12th houses

Although dusthanas are inauspicious materially speaking, they are important houses in consideration of specific spiritual inclinations in the charts of spiritualists. Natural or functional benefics in strength in these houses elevate the nature of the related areas of life for the spiritualists. Thus, some important yogas relegated to dusthanas are as following:

Harsha-yoga: The lord of the 6th house occupies the 6th itself. Briefly, the 6th house is the house of sad-ripus, and thus brings sufferings to the native if the 6th house or lord have multiple afflictions by malefics. If benefics occupy the 6th house in strength, however, if the 6th lord occupies the 6th and is aspected by natural and functional benefics, then the soul advancing on the spiritual path is interested in seva or service, and thus has little if any inclination to develop strategies by which he can achieve material success. This service either directly or indirectly promotes the cause of dharma. Note in this connection, that the 6th, like the 2nd, are the trinal houses from the 10th, and thus important within the context of dharma. Finally, Harsha-yoga is even more powerful if Sankha-yoga forms simultaneously.

Sarala-yoga: The 8th lord occupies the 8th house itself. The 8th is the house of asta-siddhis or the eight-fold mystic perfections that result from the practice of the yoga system of astanga-yoga. Perfections attained in this connection refers to extra-human powers, which, if used to exploit or abuse others, result in serious afflictions to the longevity, happiness and general well-being of the native in future lifetimes. Malefic aspects or associations to this house show that the native experiences sure and certain mental and physical afflictions throughout the course of lifetime.

If however, the lord of the 8th occupies the 8th, and especially if it is reinforced by the association or aspects of benefics, then the individual advances in consciousness through the exercise of various forms of sadhana conncted to the yoga system.

Vimala-yoga: If lord of the 12th occupies the 12th house. Naturally, interest in pursuit of moksa is encouraged and reinforced by this yoga, especially if it falls in the 12th from Lagnamsa or Karakamsa Lagna. For such to occur, the 12th lord is strengthened by way of conjunction-aspect-exchange with lords of trinal houses. If the 10th lord is involved, then the native promotes the cause of dharma through ashrams or monasteries and-or may live the life of an ascetic as well.

If, on the other hand, the 12th lord is afflicted by natural and functional malefics, then suffering due to sins acruing through prior lifetimes befalls the native. The interesting fact to note about the 12th house, however, is that whether it is afflicted or reinforced by benefics, the result is still the same: the native purges the results of prior inauspicious actions (vikarmas). In the former instance, it comes as a result of suffering, whereas in the latter instance, it occurs as a result of serving dharma. In the final analysis, however, the generation of auspicious karmas is the only way that the native can attain moksa, and not by simply suffering.

Analysis of birth chart of Srila Prabhupada Part – 3

Viparita-ayur-yoga (and longevity): If the Atmakaraka planet falls in the 1st, 3rd, 7th or 9th houses, then there is decrease in the term of longevity. This is called Vipareet-ayur-yoga. Prabhupada had long life per the rules governing longevity given in Jaimini Sutramritam. Vipareeta-ayur-yoga was cancelled, however, due to Jupiter’s aspect on to the Lagna. Thus, his ayur-khanda (term of longevity) remained long life (72-108).

Natural Age of Planets:

The natural age of planets with reference to the fructification of raja-yogas is as following:

Moon Age 0-1 One year
Mars Age 1-3 Two years
Mercury Age 3-12 Nine years
Venus Age 12-32 Twenty years
Jupiter Age 32-50 Eighteen years
Sun Age 50-70 Twenty years
Saturn Age 70-120 Fifty years

If the planet ruling the natural period is strong, then even if the Vimsottari dasa during the same time frame is bad, then the experience is not so bad. The opposite is the case if the planet ruling the natural period is weak, then even a strong Vimsottari dasa of a raja-yoga planet (s) is not so beneficial. If a planet ruling the natural period is strong and forms raja-yoga, and if the simultaneous Vimsottari dasa is also strong, and especially if the planet ruling the natural period is also the one ruling the Vimsottari dasa, then the period gives outstanding results.

  • For Prabhupada, the Vimsottari dasa during which he took sannyasa (formal order of renunciation), and started full time decision to his mission, was Mercury, starting in 1954 (age 58), and ending in 1971 (age 75). The natural period was the Sun (age 50 to 70), who is strong in moolatrikona in the 9th house, while the dasa lord was exalted. Mercury’s dasa was still in progress when he came to America in 1965, while the natural period of exalted Saturn started a year later. This was a very powerful period for the fructification of raja-yoga, as both dasa lord and natural period lord are exalted, while the fructification of raha-yoga fell in the appropriate age period as well (Jupiter-Sun-Ketu in the 9th house). Thus, the portion of Saturn’s natural period that was strongest was between age 69 to 75, when Mercury dasa was still in operation.

The Sun and Moon Ignite and Sustan Raja-yogas

The Sun and Moon as the primordial causes of creation and sustenance (the symbolic principles of Siva and Sakti respectively), both stimulate and sustain the effects of raja-yogas when they participate in such yogas. This occurs as follows:

  • The Sun, being the karaka of the 1st house, stimulates or ignites the creation or origins of something. If the Sun participates in or influences the raja-yoga in a chart, then it spurns such yogas to come into manifestation at the appropriate juncture in life.
  • The Moon, being the karaka of the 4th house, preserves or sustains the effects of raja-yoga, if influencing or participating in the yoga. If raja-yoga lasts for an extended period of time, then the Moon must be involved as the sustainer. If Moon is not participatory, then the raja-yoga can’t be sustained, and thus the native may experience only marginal results of such a combination.

Since the Moon in Prabhupada’s chart is the Ista-devata planet, it is evident that Sri Krsna desired that:

  1. Great power or sakti would come forth through the Sakti-yoga (which is also Vipareeta raja-yoga in this chart).
  2. Since the Moon aspects the 9th from the Atmakaraka and its dispositor Saturn, that his efforts to bring Krsna Consciousness to the whole world would bear fruit.
  3. That the results of such efforts would sustain over a long period of time.

The Sun may also qualify as an Ista-devata, being in the 12th from Karakamsa Lagna. The avatar of Visnu who appeared to reinforce the principles of dharma, Lord Sri Rama Chandra, made His presence known through the Sun’s stimulation of the Raja-Laksmi yoga in Prabhupada’s chart as well.

Surya and Chandra Vamsas

It is interesting in this connection that Lord Sri Rama descended in the dynasty of kings originating with the Sun-god, the Surya Vamsa. Similarly, Lord Sri Krsna descended in the dynasty of kings originating with the Moon-god, the Chandra Vamsa. Both the Sun and the Moon are poignantly participatory in the raja-yogas in Prabhupada’s chart, as shown above. This shows that his mission extended to a much broader dimension and sphere of meaning, in that the Ista-devatas in his chart are both Sun and Moon respectively. Thus not only was he a person of greatness, but his greatness extended far beyond the magnitude of ordinary humans also, in that what was conceived of as his mission, was directly the mission of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Analysis of Birth chart of Srila Prabhupada Part – 2

Tapasavi-yoga: Further, in the Navamsa chart, BK Saturn and Ketu are in Kendras from Venus, thus generating Tapasavi-yoga or yoga for asceticism and renunciation. Prabhupada related a story of how his guru (from the “other side”, or in other words, his spiritual position after death) spoke through one of his senior god-brothers, Srila Kesava Maharaja, in a dream and said that he should take the renounced order of life. Prabhupada did so in 1955, and Srila Kesava Maharaja became his sannyasa-guru.

Vipareeta raja-yoga: Vipareeta raja-yoga brings great events and experiences into the life of the native, following some kind of reversal or serious setback. It is formed when lords of the dusthana (6th, 8th or 12th) join in any of these houses. This yoga can form in other houses also, yet it is not as complete as when the said lords also join in 6th, 8th or 12th. In Prabhupada’s chart, 12th lord Mars joins 8th lord Moon in the 6th house, thus forming Vipareeta raja-yoga verbatim. Mars has even greater significance n this chart, as he is the Dharma-devata or the deity who shows the path or portal through which dharma can be fulfilled. Mars as the 12th lord is poignant here, as Prabhupada fulfilled his dharma in a foreign country, and he did it after crossing the ocean, signified by the Moon.

The reversal came in the form of Prabhupada’s suffering three heart attacks on the ship in passage to America. He thought he would never complete the trip, yet he lived nevertheless. During his sleep the night of the third heart attack, he had a dream in which all the dasa-avataras (ten incarnations of Visnu) were rowing his boat, while Sri Caitanya was at the helm of the ship. Sri Caitanya told him in dream to have courage, as he would not only live to complete his journey, but he would also spread Krsna Consciousness all over the world. Note how Mars, the 5th and 12th lord, makes an exact aspect (by degree) to the Sun in Leo. These combinations show that the heart attack occurred while in transit to America. It is also evident that he would survive the heart attacks, as the 8th lord Moon is exalted too.

Mrtyu Pada (A8) and Shatru Pada (A6)

Under normal circumstances, the intervention, either by aspect or argala, of A8- Mrtyupada or its lord, or A6- Shasta Pada or its lord, on planets forming the Vipareeta Raja-yoga, would create death instead of greatness following reversal. In Prabhupada’s chart, A8 lord Jupiter is with the Sun in Leo (heart), and forms unobstructed argala on the Mars-Moon yoga. Similarly, A6 is in Capricorn, while its lord Saturn is in great strength and aspects Mars-Moon yoga. These, however, did not bring death, as they are both indicative of the guru and his order. (Jupiter as the natural karaka of guru and Saturn as Bhratrikaraka). Thus instead of dying through the influence of these grahas, the material life and all of its illusions died when Prabhupada came to America.

Captain of the Ship

Following the creation of over 108 temples and the initiation of close to 10,000 foreign disciples, Prabhupada was as if a king, or more precisely, as the “Captain of the Ship” for those desiring to cross over the difficult ocean of Kali-yuga. Kingliness is certainly displayed, however inadvertently, with Sagittarius on the ascendant, Sun in Leo and the aspect of 5th lord Mars on to the Sun, Jupiter and Lagna. However, there are some additional yogas which seem to be found in the charts of great spiritualists, exhibiting a kingly sort of posture due to great influence over the lives of others. These are:

Mrdanga-yoga: A mrdanga is a clay drum traditionally used to accompany the congregational chanting of the names of God (sankirtana). In jyotisha, the Mrdanga-yoga forms when planets are in own or exaltation signs in kendras and trikonas, while the lagna lord is strong. This yoga is defined as “a king or equal” or someone who carries the royal insignia or persona of a king. Naturally, the strength of planets in kendras and trikonas are going to insure that correct dharmic principles are displayed through one’s thoughts and actions.

Chamara-yoga: In ritualistic ceremonies in which the Deities Laksmi-Narayana or Radha-Krsna are performed, the chamara (yak-tail whisk) is standard paraphernalia. Kings or exalted personally have been traditionally served in India since time immemorial through the waving of the chamara whisk. Chamara-yoga, through which long life, scholarliness, eloquence and learning in many arts are conferred, is formed when benefics are in 7th, 9th and 10th houses of the charts. In this chart, Jupiter-Sun-Ketu in the 9th house and Mercury-Venus in 10th generate Chamara-yoga in full.

Parijata-yoga or Kalpadruma-yoga: The Parijata-yoga reflects, in astrological terms, the blessings conferred by the kalpa-vrksa or desire tree, which exists in the spiritual world of Vaikuntha. There are some kalpa-vrksa trees that still exist in India, and one may receive deep and spiritual blessings by praying before them. A Parijata-yoga or Kalpadruma-yoga, is generated when the dispositor of the dispositor of the lord of the ascendant is in his own or exalted sign, and in kendra or trikona houses as well. This yoga applies verbatim in Prabhupada’s chart. Apart from blessings coming forth from God and His representatives, the yoga confers the following: kingliness, principled behavior, warriorship, as well as strong, prosperous and very kind individual. All of these symptoms were found in the person of Prabhupada in full.

Sakti-yoga: (the power to destroy evil): The sakti or empowerment to harness the efforts of thousands of people for the promotion of divine light or goodness in the world is the result of Sakti-yoga. It applies only in the charts of a very few individuals who are (or were) forces to destroy evil, or conversely, in the charts of some demonic entities (like Hitler or others) to destroy goodness. The Sakti-yoga literally brings about the full and complete destruction of one or two polar opposites: all that which is good or all that which is evil. The Sakti-yoga to destroy evil is formed in the following ways:

  1. The Moon and Rahu are in either the 5th or 9th houses, and aspected or conjoined only by malefics (note that only rasi drsti apply here);
  2. The Moon and Rahu are in combination with malefics, and join or aspect either the 5th or 9th houses from the lagna or the Atmakaraka planet.

If in the above combinations, there are only benefics (especially Jupiter) involved in the Moon-Rahu yoga without any malefic intervention, then the person engages in the aggressive efforts to destroy goodness in the world. In other words, such a person is a force of darkness working to destroy humanity. The Sakti-yoga of this sort was found in the chart of Adolph Hitler, who sought to destroy thousands of people, indeed all of humanity if he could.

In Prabhupada’s case, the Sakti-yoga applies in full as follows: The 9th house from the Atmakaraka Rahu has Saturn in it, while the Moon, in combination with Mars as well as Rahu, aspect the 9th. Jupiter’s position in the 11th from the 9th (from AK), and aspecting the 11th from the AK, assures the protection of the native and his mission to destroy the darkness generated by the age of Kali. Indeed, he was successful to an extent never before seen in the world.

Raja-yogas and Their Fructification

Apart from the varieties of arguments that have been put forth by different astrologers for the Sagittarius ascendant on the one hand, and the Capricorn ascendant on the other hand, the most compelling argument in favor of Sagittarius lagna has to do with the times when the raja-yogas fructified. As we shall see later on in the discussion of the Drig dasa, the results of the Jupiter-Sun-Ketu Raja-Laksmi-yoga in Prabhupada’s chart came into manifestation rather late in life. He began his mission of establishing the Hare Krsna movement in America in 1965 when he was 69 years. According to the Jaimini Sutramritam, raja-yoga fructifies at different periods of life according to:

  1. The house of the astrological chart wherein the yoga forms;
  2. The natural age or periods of the planets involved; and
  3. The specific dasa period that was operating at that time in the life of the native.

This can be summarized as follows:

Fructification of Raja-yoga:

For planets falling in specific houses of the chart, raja-yoga fructifies during youth, middle age or old age, according to the rules listed in items 1-3 below.

The general ayush-khandas (terms of longevity) are:

0-36 = short life

36-72 = middle life

72-108 = long life

  1. If the raja-yoga forms in the 2nd, 4th, 8th and-or 10th house(s), then the yoga fructifies in youth. If there are an equal number of planets in 2nd or 4th houses, then the yoga also fructifies in youth.
  2. If raja-yoga forms in the 5th, 6th, 11th and-or 12th house(s), then the yoga fructifies in the middle life.
  3. If raja-yoga forms in the 1st, 3rd, 7th and-or 9th houses(s), then the yoga fructifies in the old age. As 3rd from AL is the place of death, although for saints it can be in the 3rd from AK. This is because the 3rd house is the last house in the old age sequence according to the above schedule.

Taking the above information from Jaimini at face value, Prabhupada could not have had Capricorn rising in his chart, because then the most important of raja-yogas in his chart would have fructified in his youth, as the Jupiter-Ketu-Sun combination woyld then fall in the 8th house. With Sagittariys as the rising sign, however, the raja-yoga stimulating his mission to open temples all over the world (Jupiter and Sun in the 9th house, aspected by the lord of the 12th Mars), should have come to fruitification in his old age, and indeed they did, after the age of 69 and up to his leaving this world at the age of 77.

Jyotish and Progeny

Fertility and conception is seen from the first and fifth house. The first and fifth house from AL and in addition from Lagna/ Saptamsa Lagna also can be examined for confirming fertility and conception.

Consider the Arudha Padas of the third and ninth houses from the Sun and the eighth houses from these. If Mercury and Venus are in (these eighth houses) from the Arudha Padas, conception is unlikely (i.e. the native is barren)
If the Sun is in 2nd/ 8th from the above said Arudha Padas, it will cause infertility. If Sun is in 6th or 12th from the above said Arudha Padas, then also conception is unlikely.

In this manner, examine fertility/ conception from the third and ninth from the Lagna (and Atmakaraka). It may be noted that when the fertility indication from the Lagna and Sun are variant, the Lagna will prevail. In case of variance, if the Sun shows fertility and the ascendant shows infertility, medical intervention is required. If both Sun & Lagna shows infertility, there can be no cure.

Case Study 1. A3 – Leo A9 – Cancer AS3 – Leo AS9 – Cancer

In this chart, the Sun is in Leo and the third and ninth house Arudha Padas are Leo (AS3) and Cancer (AS9) respectively. AS9 is stronger as AS3 has Sun and Moon conjoined making it weaker whereas AS9 has Rahu and Mars. Sun is in 2nd from AS9 indicating infertility.
The Lagna is Leo with the Arudha Padas of the third and ninth houses in Leo and Cancer respectively. Again A9 is stronger and Sun is in 2nd from A9 indicating infertility.
Adding more to it, Jupiter the natural Putrakaraka and 5th lord is conjoined with Saturn, Mercury and Venus. All these three planets tend to obstruct Naisargika Putrakaraka Jupiter, indicating infertility. Since all indicators are indicating infertility, the native will have no child. The native is having health issues like diabetes, kidney problem, BP etc and as per medical advice; it is very difficult to conceive.

Case Study 2. A3 – Capricorn A9 – Virgo AS3 – Aquarius AS9 – Leo

In this chart, the Sun is in Aries and the 3rd and 9th house Arudha Padas are Aquarius (AS3) and Leo (AS9) respectively. Now AS3 is stronger being aspected by Rahu. Sun is in 3rd from AS3 indicating fertility. Also 8th house from AS3 doesn’t have the conjunction of Mercury and Venus, indicating fertility.
The Lagna is Pisces with the Arudha Padas of the 3rd and 9th houses in Capricorn and Virgo respectively. A9 is stronger having aspect of Saturn, Mars and Venus. Sun is in 8th from A9 indicating infertility. Lagna is showing infertility whereas Sun is showing fertility. This indicates medical intervention is required. The native has two daughters after initial medical intervention.

Case Study 3. A3 – Taurus A9 – Gemini AS3 – Saggitarius AS9 – Leo

In this chart, the Sun is in Aquarius and the 3rd and 9th house Arudha Padas are Saggitarius (AS3) and Leo (AS9) respectively. AS9 is stronger having Mars and Moon conjoining it. Sun is in 7th from AS9 indicating fertility.
The Lagna is Gemini with the Arudha Padas of the 3rd and 9th houses in Taurus (A3) and Gemini (A9). A9 is stronger having Mercury conjoining it. Sun is in 9th from A9 indicating fertility. As both Lagna and Sun are indicating fertility, the native should have children. But the real life facts are quite different. This can be seen from Saptamsa Chart.
As per Jaimini Sutra 1.4.24, Mercury, Saturn and/or Venus in Saptamsa Lagna tend to deny children or progenic bliss.

Saturn, Mercury and Venus all three are in trines to Saptamsa Lagna indicating dominating influence on Saptamsa Lagna and thus denying children and progenic bliss.

This case also indicates that the system of Arudha Padas from the Sun and Lagna is only indicative and a final decision can be had only from the Saptamsa chart.

There are other factors which can deny progeny. I will try to explain them from following examples:

Case Study 4. A3 – Capricorn A9 – Leo AS3 – Taurus AS9 – Saggitarius

In this chart, AS3 and AS9 is in Taurus and Saggitarius respectively, whereas A3 and A9 is in Capricorn and Leo. AS9 is stronger being aspected by Rahu, Mars and Saturn and conjoined by Mercury and Ketu. Sun is in 2nd from AS9 indicating infertility. On the other hand, A3 is stronger and Sun is placed in A3 indicating fertility. When Lagna indicates fertility and Sun indicates infertility, it means that the soul doesn’t want to enter in the womb. This needs astrological intervention. Now if we look at the chart more deeply, 5th house is very heavily afflicted by Rahu, Mars and Saturn aspect. Jupiter is placed in MKS in Libra and Libra is Sunya Rasi for Magha Nakshatra in which Moon is. This clearly denies children indicating there will be a void on children front in the native’s life forever.
