Judgement of Results : Vimsottari Dasa Part – 4

Argala

1)      The houses on which the dasa planet has subha argala (beneficial intervention) by being in the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th or 11th from it, shall prosper. Papa Argala (malefic intervention) by the dasa planet being a natural malefic also results in beneficence to the bhava in the short, but is evil in the long run.

2)      If the Argala of the dasa planet is obstructed Virodh Argala, then during the antar dasa of such planets, the good result of the concerned house shall be obstructed or reversed.

Three parts of period

Every dasa or antardasa can be divided into 3 parts to judge the trend.

1)      Udaya (Rising): Planets in Sirsodaya (head rising) signs give results (good or bad) at the beginning (first 1/3 portion) of their dasa/ antar.  Planets in pristodaya signs (back rising) give results at the end (last 1/3 portion) of their period and planets in ubhyodaya (both rising only Pisces) give results in the middle (middle 1/3rd portion) of their periods. Some astrologers opine that the planets in ubhyodaya rasi give results throughout the period (JP 18-26)

2)      For malefic planets the results of its exaltation or such strength in divisions is felt in the first three sub periods i.e. about 1/3rd the period of dasa/ antardasa. The results of its house placement and ownership are felt in the next three sub periods i.e. the middle 1/3rd part of the dasa/ antardasa. The results of its aspects as well as aspect, on it will be felt in the concluding 1/3rd portion or last three sub periods.

3)      For benefic planets, the result of its ownership and house placement are felt in the first three sub-periods (i.e. first 1/3rd part of the period); its exaltation and strength show their results in the middle part (i.e. next 1/3rd part) whereas the aspects on it as well as its aspect bear fruit in the last (i.e. concluding 1/3rd part) of the dasa.

Sandhi (Junction)

1)      Planets in bhava sandhi (junction of houses) are incapable of influencing the houses they are placed in. Planets in Rasi Sandhi (junction of signs) suffer annihilation especially when the ruling elements of the adjoining signs are inimical (e.g. Fire and water).

Rasi Sandhi Example

Chart 10 D-1

Chart 10 D-9

In the above chart, the Moon is in Gandanta i.e. it is in the last Navamsa of Scorpio (a sign in which is the junction between a water and fire sign). Placement in Gandanta caused a serious accident in childhood, but he survived due to exalted Venus in Lagna. A closer look reveals that the Moon is in the last degree of Scorpio i.e. it is placed in Rasi Sandhi or the junction of Scorpio and Sagittarius. Such an ill placement in Rasi Sandhi destroys the house lorded by the planet in Rasi Sandhi. Moon is the fifth lord and rules progeny. The native has been having lots of problems with love affairs as these either do not mature into marriage or, when one such affair did mature into a marriage, the desire of a child resulted in differences that are causing separation between the couple.

2)      Planets in bhava sandhi (junction of houses) cause disease and sorrow while those in Rasi Sandhi (junction of signs) can cause death. Rasi Sandhi between fire and water signs is called Gandanta.

YOGA (UNION/SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP)

Yoga means union and umpteen Yoga’s are listed in the classical literature on Jyotish. Instead of repeating them here, we shall discuss how to use them for predictions.

1)      Yogas (good or bad) shall be felt at all times if their karaka are strong (or weak) else, these shall fructify for short periods during the dasa of the yoga causing planets. This knowledge is vital in timing the fructification of the Yoga and other events.

2)      Pancha Mahapurush Yoga caused by the placement of either of five planets (Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn) in exaltation or own sign in a kendra from Lagna indicates the birth of a great personality and promises fame, power and good fortune due to a predominance of the tattwa (indicated by the yoga causing planet). However if the Sun is weak, the yoga can never materialize and even if it materializes, it cannot be sustained if the Moon is weak. In such a case, the effects of the yoga are not felt for long durations and only during the dasa (periods) of the planet causing the Mahapurush yoga, some fame, rise etc. will be seen. Thus in every yoga, it is important to identify the planets causing it and sustaining it.

3)      Kartari yoga, if caused by natural benefics (called subha-kartari) placed in the 2nd & 12th from any planet indicate destruction of enemies during the dasa of the planet. In the case of papa-kartari yoga (malefics instead of benefic planets in 2nd & 12th houses from any planet), the planet suffering from such blemish indicates trouble from enemies. Final results should be declared only after an examination of strength of Lagna Lord. Note that the Karaka for Paka Lagna is Jupiter.

4)      If a planet associates with an inimical planet, then battles occur and enmity increases during its dasa. Graha Yuddha (planetary war) results in defeat or victory depending on whether the planet concerned is defeated or victorious as per longitude in the sign i.e. a planet with a higher longitude in victorious even if debilitated Rajayoga.

5)      Royal favor (appointments, power etc) is obtained during the period of Jupiter or the 5th lord. Planets associating with them or having unobstructed beneficial Argala or associated with the Ghatika Lagna give power and authority.

6)      Dhanyoga Great wealth/ sustenance power; Moon is the Karaka for sustenance (whereas Jupiter only indicates accumulated funds which is one aspect of it). Thus, during the favorable Moon dasa or the lord of 2nd house Dhanyoga results. Planets associated with the Moon, Argala on the moon or associated with the Hora lagna give wealth and Dhanyoga.

7)      In a similar manner, the 9th house and Sun/ Jupiter are examined for Dharma, religious austerities etc. (Sun) or for Guru higher learning (Jupiter). The tenth house and its four karakas (Sun, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury) are examined for profession, meritorious rites, Yagya, pilgrimages etc.

DISPOSITOR

The following are classified as dispositors

(i)                  Lord of the sign occupied by a planet is called Pakesha.

(ii)                Lord of the Navamsa occupied by a planet called Amsesha.

(iii)               Lord of the sign occupied by the Pakesha

(iv)              Lord of the Navamsa occupied by the Lord ascertained at (iii)

(v)                Lord of the Nakshatra occupied by a planet (as per Vimsottari scheme) called Jeeva.

1)      During the periods of such dispositors placed in strength in Kendra the houses owned by the planet prosper and gain prominence.

2)      If they dispositors are ill placed in depression or inimical signs they cause a fall or destruction of the houses owned by the planet. If the dispositors are in dusthana, they cause destruction and trouble due to enemies (6th house), own flaws/ disease (8th house), past debts (12th house) or evil (badhaka sign).

Marana karaka

The specific most malefic positions of planets capable of causing death like suffering are as follows:- Sun in 12th house, Moon in 8th house, Mars in 7th house, Mercury in 7th house, Jupiter in 3rd house, Venus in 6th house, Saturn in 1st house and Rahu in 9th house from the Lagna (or dasa rasi). Such positions of the planets are called Marana Sthana (death inflicting) and the planets become Marana Karaka (death inflictors). When such a death inflictor is in conjunction with or aspected by malefics or in inimical or depression signs, great grief is sure to come.

Sun causes fire hazards; Moon indicates danger from water; Mars causes accident and danger from weapons; Mercury indicates trouble due to flatulence; stomach problems are indicated by Jupiter; Accident, trouble from opposite sex are caused by Venus and venomous bites by Rahu. Similarly, the planet becoming Marana Karaka will not do well for its Karakatwa (Signification) and will surely tend to destroy the houses it owns.

Case Study: Erstwhile USSR

Chart 9 Vimsottari Dasa D-1

Chart 9 Vimsottari Dasa D-9

The chart of the erstwhile USSR has the 10th lord Sun placed in the 12th house in Marana Karaka Sthana. Such a debilitated and ill placed Sun indicates the destruction of its sign Leo which is also the tenth house in the chart. In any mundane chart the tenth house indicates the rulers or leaders and its lord in Marana Karaka Sthana, in debility and conjoined the malefic 8th and 11th lord Mercury indicates the death of leaders and consequential destruction of the Union.

Moon:  1985-12-03 – 1987-06-01

Mars:  1987-06-01 – 1988-06-20

The planets aspecting or stationed in the Marana Karaka’s sign (Leo) are Mars & Rahu. Whereas Mars, being the lord of the sign of exaltation of the Sun and placed in a kendra to Lagna causes the neechabhanga (cancellation of debility) of the Sun and hence, during its dasa, the Marana Karaka results will not manifest. However, during the dasa of Rahu, placed in debility in Sagittarius and aspecting Leo, the Marana Karaka results are sure to occur. Reckoned from the Sun (10th lord for leaders), the Argala (intervention) of Mars in the 11th house is fully removed by Rahu and Venus in the 3rd house. Such a obstruction to Argala will occur during the conjoined period of Rahu & Venus. Thus, with the advent of Venus antardasa in Rahu dasa, the table was set for the functioning of the Marana Karaka yoga for the leaders.

Reckoned from Venus, Moon & Saturn are in the eighth house as well as in the eighth house whereas this Sani-Chandra yoga is in the Badhak house from Lagna. From Leo, the 12th house is Cancer with the Saturn – Moon conjunction. Saturn is the evil maraka (killer) for Leo.

On November 10, 1982, in Rahu dasa – Venus antardasa – Moon Pratyantara, Leonid Brezhnev the head of state, died. He was succeeded Andropov who was helpless in the face of the fifth consecutive year of bad harvest in 1983. Thereafter on 9th February 1984 in Rahu dasa – Venus antardasa – Saturn Pratyantara, Andropov died. He was succeeded by Chernenko on 13th February 1984. Subsequently, after a year Chernenko also died on 10th March 1985.

Normally when such terrible Marana Karaka Yoga functions, the native himself dies or there are three deaths around him before the evil period ends. The successor Gorbachev made history by undoing the USSR and creating Russia. Thus, the USSR itself was dissolved after this terrible Marana Karaka Yoga.

Judgement of Results : Vimsottari Dasa Part – 2

Placement

Strength

1)      The good or evil experienced by any person is in accordance with the dasa prevailing at any point of time. The fructification of yoga (good or bad) and extent of such fruits are dependent on the strength of the planets. Hence, wise astrologers should in the first place ascertain the strength of the planets. The sources of strength shall indicate the directions from where the good results will come whereas the sources which are weak shall indicate areas of suffering. This should be intelligently applied to Vimsopaka strength as well. The results, good or bad, shall also depend on the vocation (career etc) and ayana (goals). Uchcha bala, especially when the planet is moving towards its exaltation gives status. In this manner the other sources should be examined qualitatively and quantitatively.

2)      Thus, even if the planet is placed in a Kendra, if it is weak it shall bring disease/ decay to the houses it owns, especially during the periods of such malefics/ planets that are the cause of its weakness.

3)      Any house prospers if its quadrants or trines are well conjoined and aspected. The reverse is the case due to malefic conjunctions/ aspects. In such cases the Lord of the Bhava cannot be considered evil. For example, Saturn is placed in the 2nd house, during its dasa the quadrant houses 2, 5, 8 and 11 shall suffer and dwindle unless these houses are owned by Saturn (relationships also count). Similarly, trines to the 2nd house (6th and 10th) also suffer annihilation. Saturn would have a full aspect on the 4th and 11th houses (being the 3rd/10th from the 2nd house) causing these to suffer.

4)      The period of the badhakesh or of a planet associated with it brings disease and sorrow (Agantuka adritsa). If the planets are benefic then the evil is easily pacified but if malefic and associated with fixed signs/ navamsa it is difficult to overcome.

5)      Planets placed in Badhak sign bring sorrow and suffering due to Agantuka (external) adrista (unknown causes) roga (suffering & disease as manifesting from karma). Planets in Kendra to Badhak sign give sorrow or foreign travel.

Case Study: Debilitated Moon

Chart 8 Vimsottari Dasa

Chart 8 Vimsottari Dasa D-9

In the chart, Moon is the 12th lord and is debilitated in the fourth house. Cancellation of debility occurs due to the placement of Venus in strength in its own sign (Malavya Mahapurusha Yoga) in a Kendra from Lagna and the Moon as well. The debility of the 12th lord indicates the destruction of the significations of the 12th house during its period. The Upapada (Arudha Pada of the 12th house indicating the fortunes of marriage & spouse) is in Pisces and its lord Jupiter is also debilitated. Cancellation of debility of Jupiter is brought about by the placement of Saturn, its dispositor in a Kendra from Lagna and the Moon. Thus, prima facie, there is considerable trouble in the 12th house and bed pleasures and conjugal bliss will be lacking. The family of the spouse would be very ordinary or poor at the time of birth and would have risen gradually (Jupiter in Pisces Navamsa in the seventh house from Lagnamsa conjoined an exalted Venus). With the advent of Moon dasa, the native’s marital life became unbearable and his spouse tormented him. The seventh lord Saturn placed in Lagna indicates a dominating spouse and the nature of Saturn would indicate considerable coldness. Their marriage was in doldrums and the native considered divorce during Moon dasa Ketu antardasa. Fasting on the days of the lord of the Upapada (Thursdays) and other remedial measures helped to tide over the crisis. Ketu in 12th from Moon and Arudha Lagna gave sudden losses and expenses. Everything went awry and out of control. Ketu is in Kendra to Badhak sign as well as Badhak lord Mars. However, with the advent of Venus antardasa, the neechabhanga (cancellation of debility) promised, occurred and the native re-established himself both in business and home.

Judgement of Results : Vimsottari Dasa Part – 1

LORDSHIP OF HOUSES & SIGNS

The single most important planet in any horoscope in the lord of Lagna as it represents the person himself. The sign occupied by the Lagna lord is called Paka Lagna. Similarly examine other houses.

1)      If the Lord is exalted the house owned by it shall flourish, if the Lord is debilitated the houses owned by it shall be destroyed.

This is a very general statement and advises us to look at the status of the lord of a house. Jaimini has explained that the planets in debility or exaltation, if associated with the house of income give tremendous gains. This, prima facie seems to be contradictory. Whether a planet is going to give wealth and gains or not is seen from the 11th house from Lagna & Arudha Lagna. If such a planet is exalted then it shall not only give tremendous gains, but the houses owned by it shall also flourish. If such a planet is debilitated then it gives a lot of income, but will destroy the houses it owns.

A planet in debility can ruin all others conjunct with it even if they are exalted. If it is conjunct Rahu, then great evil is predicted during its dasa/antar. However if it attains neechabhanga (cancellation of debility), then it shall give Rajayoga during its period and all planets conjoined shall work in harmony with it. Neechabhanga occurs due to the placement of either of the following in Kendra (Quadrants only) to Lagna/Moon.

  • Lord of the Sign of debility
  • Lord of the signs opposite the sign of debility i.e. the lord of the sign of exaltation
  • Planet that is exalted in the sign of debility of another
  • The debilitated planet is placed in Navamsa which is that of its sign of exaltation
  • If neechabhanga is absent, some good results can be expected if the debilitated planet is in the navamsa of a sign owned by it.
  • If none of these happen, then the period of the debilitated planet as well as that of dispositor shall spell ruin and destruction.

2)      A planet placed in its Moolatrikona (office) or own sign (home) shall prove to be very auspicious in successfully promoting the matters signified by the houses it owns. In a friendly sign it shall be supportive but in an inimical or unfriendly sign, the affairs indicated by the houses owned by it shall be annihilated or diminish respectively.

3)      If the Lord of a house is placed in the 6th, 8th, 12th or obstruction (Badhak) sign, then the house suffers due to enemies (agantuka-drista), own Karma (nija-roga), past debt (rina) or evil forces (agantuka-adrista) respectively. Similarly the lords of these houses placed in any bhava shall damage it due to such sources of evil.

4)      If the Lord of any house is placed in kendra (quadrant) in strength and is well aspected, the house owned shall flourish during its period due to the native’s karma. If in such a case, the placement is in the trikonas (5th & 9th) the houses flourish due to good fortune and blessings.

5)      If the Lord of any house is placed in the 8th from it, it suffers complete destruction even if the said lord is exalted. This destruction is sure to come if the lord is a natural benefic like Jupiter or Moon. Beneficial aspects shall somehow try to protect such a house. It may be noted that the planets aspecting or occupying it cannot make it prosper or become beneficial if its lord is ill placed (i.e. in 6th, 8th or 12th from it), in an inimical house, is in dur-avastha (bad state), eclipsed or impotent due to defeat in planetary war.

6)      Even if the above is true i.e. the planet is ill placed, in a bad state, eclipsed or in an inimical or sign of depression, if it is in its exaltation, own or friendly navamsa it manages to salvage the damage and recover after an initial setback. Such a navamsa/ sign placement causing cancellation of weakness or debility is nothing less than the nectar that flows from the glance of the Guru.

7)      Planets and houses aspected or conjoined by Jupiter, Mercury and its Lord shall prove auspicious during their periods. Some add Venus to this list and others add the Moon as well. Houses aspected or conjoined by Saturn, Mars and Rahu shall suffer evil during their periods. Good or bad would depend on the nature of the houses and their relationship with Lagna Lord.

Malefics afflicting 5th house

SR Rasi SR Saptamsa

In the Rasi chart, the fifth house from Lagna and karaka (Jupiter) is Cancer. The malefic lords of the eighth house (Venus: Nija-roga) and sixth house (Sun: Agantuka drishti – Roga) are placed in the fifth house thereby afflicting it. The lord of the fifth house (Moon) is ill placed in the 12th house in dagdha (combust) tithi. The lord of the 12th house (both Saturn & Rahu as the lords of Aquarius) aspect and afflict the fifth house. Thus, the fifth house is considerably damaged by all these evil lords of the dusthana and its lord is also ill placed indicating danger to children. The saving grace is the aspect of Jupiter. Further, Venus shall not be bad for daughters, but shall be evil for sons.

In the Saptamsa (D-7), the fifth lord Mars is well placed in a kendra with the Moon and Ketu indicating that the first child will be a daughter. The daughter was born in Saturn dasa – Mars antardasa – Venus pratyantar (Vimsottari : Moon start) or more precisely, Venus – Venus – Jupiter (Vimsottari : Lagna start). The seventh lord is ill placed in the 12th house in an insect sign Scorpio and has an exchange (Parivartana yoga) with its dispositor Mars which is placed in Gemini. Parivartana means change or opposite to indications. Thus, although Mercury in Scorpio indicates a daughter, the opposite (i.e. a son) shall be born as the second child. All is not well when there is such an exchange involving bitter enemies Mars & Mercury. The child was born in Saturn dasa – Rahu antardasa – Venus pratyantar (Vimsottari : Moon start) [or more precisely, Venus dasa Sun antardasa in Vimsottari : Lagna start] and has very low IQ  besides having an inability to speak (Mercury ruling speech is afflicted by Mars due to the exchange and is weak in the 12th house).

In this chart, considering the Rasi (D-1) chakra alone and standard method of determining progeny, we will find that Venus and Sun in the fifth house from Lagna/ Jupiter shall indicate two children – one daughter (Venus) and the other a son (Sun).

Event                                                                                                                 Vimsottari Dasa
Date Description Moon start Lagna start Remarks
15 July 1991 Government Service Saturn dasa – Moon antar Venus dasa – Venus antar Venus is the lord of the 3rd house placed in the fifth house  indicating Government service. It is also conjoined the Sun in the fifth house of authority indicating government service.
29 August 1991 Love Marriage Saturn – Moon Venus – Venus Both periods indicate marriage but Venus as the seventh lord of navamsa is a better indicator. In addition, it is also the lord of Upapada and placed in the fifth house indicating the love marriage.
21 Dec 1992 Birth of daughter Saturn – Mars Venus – Venus Venus is placed in the fifth house to clearly indicate the birth of daughter in its antardasa
1 June 1995 Birth of son Saturn – Rahu Venus – Sun Sun is placed in the fifth house to clearly indicate the birth of the son. Rahu is the dispositor of the fifth lord Moon and also indicates, but the Sun is a better indicator.

Interpreting Vimshottari dasa

1.   A planet shall give the results of the house it owns. For example, if a planet of fifth lord, then it will give progeny or power in its dasa.

2.     A planet gives results (either good or bad) as per the functional significations as mentioned in the following guidelines:

  • Whichever house the planet is placed in
  • Whichever house the planet aspects
  • Whichever house’s lord it is placed with
  • Whichever house’s lord it aspects

During the dasa of a planet, the natural significance (naisargika karakatva) gains or suffers based on whether the placement of the planet is auspicious or inauspicious.

The results will be auspicious if:

  • The planet is placed in Exaltation, Mulatrikona, Own house, or friends house
  • Placed with benefics/ friends
  • Aspected by benefics
  • Hemmed between benefics

The results will be inauspicious if:

  • The planet is placed in debilitation, enemy sign
  • Placed with malefics
  • Aspected by malefics
  • Hemmed between malefics

3.   A planet is capable of giving results as per its functional or natural significations either in the dasa or antardasa or smaller periods. The functional significations are based on the lordship, placement and yogas this planet would have in the horoscope. The natural signification is based on what they signify naturally, such as Venus signifies marriage and relationship, Jupiter signifies progeny etc.

4.   Normally a planet would not confer the result (either auspicious or inauspicious) in its own antardasa. They do so in the antardasa of the planet associated with it. By association following things are meant and should be taken into consideration:

  • Conjunction
  • Planet aspecting the dasa lord
  • Planet having subha-argala on the dasa lord
  • Planet exchanges position (either Rasi, Nakshatra or Navamsa) with the dasa lord
  • Any planets who share the same dharma as of the dasa lord.

The following planets share the same dharma as of the dasa lord.

  • All saumya grahas (Jupiter, Venus, well associated Mercury and strong Moon (in paksha bala) have the same dharma.
  • All papa grahas (Saturn, Mars, Sun, badly associated Mercury and weak Moon)have the same dharma.
  • Yoga karaka- The other planet involved in the yoga, leaving the yoga karaka under consideration.

Note: In all the cases, if the yoga is auspicious, then the auspicious results of the dasa lord is felt and vice-versa, Thus the Maha dasa lord gives its results only in the antardasa which is suitable.

5.   The dasa of the yoga karaka shall have following results in different Antar dasas:

  • Antardasa of a related auspicious planet (yoga karaka or lord of trines), the results will be auspicious.
  • Antardasa of related yoga karaka, the results will be very auspicious.
  • Antardasa of related functional malefic planet (lord of the trisadayas and the eighth), the effect of the raja yoga would be extremely feeble.
  • Antardasa of a related Marakesh, only minor results would be present.
  • Antardasa of an unrelated auspicious planet, the results would be moderately auspicious.
  • Antardasa of unrelated functional malefic planet or Marakesh, the results would be extremely inauspicious- however, some good results of the auspicious dasa lord shall also be felt.

6.    During the antardasa of a functional malefic (planets suffering with kendradhipatya dosa or the lords of the trisadaya or the eighth lord) planet, following results are felt:

  • The antardasa of an unrelated functional benefic/ yoga karaka, the results would be inauspicious.
  • The antardasa of a related functional benefic, the results would be inauspicious- lesser of the inauspicious dasa lord and more of the auspicious antardasa lord.
  • The antardasa of the neutral planet shall give inauspicious results
  • The antardasa of related or unrelated functional malefic would be terrible- more so in the case of related planet
  • The antardasa of functional benefic in dasa of a Marakesh, the person would not die, however the antardasa of an unrelated functional malefic can cause death.
  • In the dasa of Kendra lord or Trikona lord, the results of different antardasa would be:

Ø   If Kendra and Trikona lord are associated, then in the dasa of the Kendra lord, Trikona lord’s antardasa would be auspicious and vice- versa.

Ø   If Kendra and the Trikona lords are not related, then in the dasa of Papa Kendra lord, the antar  of  Subha  Trikona  lord  would  be  little  auspicious,  whereas  the  antar  of  papa Trikona lord would be inauspicious.

7.   In addition, during the dasa of a Subha Kendra lord, the antar of a papa Trikona lord would be little auspicious and the antar of a subha Trikona lord, the results would be predominantly auspicious.

8.     In the dasa of Papa Trikona lord, the antar of subha Kendra lord would be auspicious and antar of papa Kendra lord would be little auspicious (provided the Trikona lord is not eighth lord simultaneously).

9.     In the dasa of Subha Trikona lord, the antar of subha Kendra lord would be auspicious and the antar of the papa Kendra lord can be little auspicious, if it is associated with the Trikona lord.

  • If there is no association between them, then the antar would be predominantly inauspicious.

10. The results of Antardasa in Dasas of the Nodes:

  • If the nodes are placed in Trikona, then the antar of the Kendra lords confer Raja yoga. This is also true during the dasa of Kendra lord and antardasa of the nodes so placed in Trikona.
  • Similarly if the nodes are placed in Kendra, the antar of the Trikona lords confer Raja yoga. This is also true during the dasa of Trikona lord and antardasa of the nodes so placed in Kendra
  • If the nodes are placed in auspicious houses, then their antardasas in the dasa of a yogakakara or during the antardasa of a yogakaraka in their (nodes) dasa, the results are extremely auspicious
  • If the nodes are associated with the 8th / 12th house/ lords, then their dasa/ antardasa would be inauspicious.

11.  According to Phaladeepika, the dasa of a planet becomes inauspicious, if they fall in a particular sequence as mentioned below:

  • Saturn’s dasa happens to be  the 4th dasa
  • Mars’s dasa happens to be the 5th dasa
  • Jupiter’s dasa happens to be the 6th dasa

12. Dasa of planets placed in the Rasi Sandhi/ Gandanta is terrible to the house lorded by the planet and the natural significations of the planet. The trouble would pass by in a malefic antar and would be lesser during the benefic antar.

13. The dasa of sixth, eighth or twelfth is troublesome. The trouble is lesser if the lord is well placed in exaltation, mulatrikona, own sign or friend’s sign and would be more, if badly placed in its debilitation sign or enemy’s sign.

14. During the dasa of a planet, the native is endowed with the nature and complexion of the dasa lord. The fiery planets would give brilliance, the watery planet would make one emotional and compassionate, the earthy planets make one hard working and the air planet would make the person thoughtful and philosophical. Along with this, the native would partake the guna of the dasa lord. Thus during the Jupiter, Sun and Moon’s dasa the native becomes sattvik, during the dasa of Venus and Mercury, the native becomes Rajasik and during the dasa of Mars and Saturn, the native becomes tamasik. More effect of the guna of planets on the native can be learnt from BPHS and Saravali.

15. The result of a planet going towards its exaltation increases as the dasa progresses and similarly, the dasa of a planet diminishes with progress of the dasa, if the dasa lord is going towards its debilitation (one sign behind the sign of debilitation).

16. Malefics give their results of its placement in a rasi during the first third part, the results of its placement in a bhava in the middle third and the results of its aspect in the last third of the dasa. Similarly, Benefics give their results of their bhava in the beginning third, the result of rasi in the middle third and the aspects in the last third of the dasa.

17.  When the dasa and the antar-dasa lords are placed in the 6th/ 8th or 12th from each other, these show enmity, physical troubles, troubles from unknown sources etc. If the antar lord is a friend to  the dasa lord or the Lagna lord and well placed in the sign, then the trouble would be lessened. On the contrary, if the dasa- antar lords are badly placed and the antar lord is an enemy to the dasa lord and/ or the Lagna lord then the antar would be very troublesome.

18. During the dasa of a planet, the house where the antar lord is placed the results of that house would be specifically felt. For example, if someone is running the dasa- antar of Sun- Moon; and Moon is placed in the 5th house from the dasa lord, then the 5th house effect would be specifically experienced. The good or bad results to be experienced related to that bhava would be based on whether or not the dasa and antar lords are well placed.

19.  If the dasa lord is capable of giving both good and bad results (such as a planet becoming an yogakaraka as well as maraca at the same time) by the virtue of its placement and yoga, then the good results would be felt during the antar of planets beneficially disposed and the negative results would be felt during to the antar of negatively disposed planets.

20.   During the dasa of a planet, whichever house it transits from the Lagna, the result of that particular  house would be specifically felt during such transit.

21. The results of the dasa are modified based on the transit of the dasa lords in different signs. If the dasa lord goes to an enemy’s sign or the sign of debilitation or the sign having lesser bindus (less than 4) in the dasa lord’s astakavarga, or the sign having lesser bindus in the sarva-astakavarga and in addition having transiting a malefic house (reckoned from Moon), then the effect would be extremely negative, if the dasa is of an evil planet or if it is of an auspicious planet, then its auspiciousness would be greatly reduced.

22. On the contrary, if the dasa lord moves to its sign of exaltation/ mulatrikona/ own/ friend’s sign and / or in a sign with high astakavarga in the dasa lord’s astakavarga, then the effect of the dasa during that time would be extremely good if the dasa is of an auspicious planet or lesser troublesome planet, or  if the dasa is an evil dasa.

23. The effect of the dasa planet can be seen in different areas of life from the Divisional charts related to that particular area of life. To understand this, one needs to study the divisional charts and then intelligently apply the dasa rules in those charts.

24. In the mahadasa of a planet, the antar would be good if:

  • The antar lord is a friend to the dasa lord.
  • The antar lord is a friend to the lagna lord.
  • The antar lord is well placed as reckoned from the dasa lord. The antar lord is related to the dasa lord.
  • The antar lord is well placed as reckoned from the Moon.

25. The dasa of the 2nd and 7th lord from a bhava becomes the marakesh dasa for that bhava. If these planets are weak and afflicted then it would surely cause trouble to the significations of the bhava under consideration.

26. Similarly during the dasa of the 12th lord from a bhava, the native suffers from losses related the bhava under consideration.

27. During the dasa of the 8th lord from a bhava, the relations ruled by the concerned bhava suffers ill health, if the said planet is weakly placed and/ or afflicted.

Vimsottari Dasa

Types of Vimshottari

Starting point for calculation

Śastra provides few points as starting points but for phalita (predicitng) we use:

Ø Lagna

    • This option is of choice when Kendra to Lagna is stronger than Kendra to Moon.
    • Lagna-Vimshottari demands rectification up to D-60 chart, so if this is not available we should use Chandra Vimshottari.

Ø Chandra

    • This should be chosen when Kendra to Moon are strong.
    • Chandra Vimshottari is always accurate and shows society interaction and our desires involved.
    • Some famous astrologers were very accurate using only Chandra Vimshottari.

Ø Utpanna (fifth star)

    • Shows śrishtri (creation) and means that native focused on creating something innovative for the society, this will show how this process of creation evolves.
    • This Dasa should be used when Moon is in third, eight or sixth, eleventh.
    • Moon in third, sixth, eight or eleventh shows weak relation with the ‘tides’ of the society and Chandra-Vimshottari may not be so accurate for these charts.

Whilst analysing the strength of Moon/Lagna if arrived at equal strength we should see if Ju/Me or Nakshatra Lord aspects by Rashi Dristi Moon or Lagna. If still equal, then Moon-Vimshottari should be chosen.
